Military time is the 24-hour clock: hours run from 00 to 23 and are written as four digits without a colon, so midnight is 0000, noon is 1200, and 3:00 PM is 1500. To convert afternoon military time to standard time, subtract 12 from the hour (1700 - 1200 = 5:00 PM).

Type any time below to convert it, print the 24-hour chart for your clipboard or med cart, or total an overnight shift for your timesheet.

How to convert military time

Military time to standard time

From 1300 to 2359, subtract 1200 and add PM: 2015 becomes 8:15 PM. From 0100 to 1159, drop the leading zero and add AM: 0645 is 6:45 AM. 1200 to 1259 is PM, and 0000 to 0059 is the 12 AM hour.

Standard time to military time

For PM times from 1:00 to 11:59, add 12 to the hour: 4:30 PM is 1630. For AM times, write the hour with a leading zero: 9:05 AM is 0905. 12 AM becomes 00 (12:30 AM = 0030) and 12 PM stays 12 (12:30 PM = 1230).

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert military time to standard time?

For 0100 to 1259, the time is the same, just add AM before 1200 or PM from 1200 to 1259 and add a colon (0930 = 9:30 AM). For 1300 to 2359, subtract 1200 and add PM (1845 - 1200 = 6:45 PM). 0000 to 0059 is the 12 AM hour (0015 = 12:15 AM).

What time is 1700 in military time?

1700 is 5:00 PM. Subtract 12 from the hour: 17 - 12 = 5, so 1700 is five o'clock in the afternoon, said "seventeen hundred hours."

Is midnight 0000 or 2400?

Both refer to midnight. 0000 is the start of a new day and is the standard form in most charts and timesheets. 2400 marks the end of a day, so a shift ending at midnight may be written 2400, which is the same moment as 0000 the next day. Times after midnight are 0001, 0002, and so on, never 2401.

How do you say military time?

Say the hour and minutes as two numbers. On the hour, say "hundred hours": 1400 is "fourteen hundred hours" and 0800 is "zero eight hundred hours." With minutes, say each pair: 0730 is "zero seven thirty" and 2145 is "twenty-one forty-five." A leading zero is said as "zero" (some people say "oh").

Why do nurses and caregivers use military time?

Hospitals, home health agencies, and care facilities chart in 24-hour time so medication times, vital signs, and visit notes cannot be confused between AM and PM. One unambiguous number per time also makes overnight shifts and handoffs easier to document.
